This fragment of woodland between Rayleigh and Eastwood developed after a 'plotlands' settlement was abandoned in the 1940s. The original plotland roads can still be seen and also the hawthorn hedges planted to mark out the plots. The remaining area has been colonised mainly by hawthorn and oak, but there are also some large wild cherry and ash trees, patches of open grassland and a couple of small ponds, possibly in bomb craters.

Visiting

To the north of Eastwood Road (A1015), roughly midway between Rayleigh and Eastwood. From the A127, turn north at the Rayleigh Weir roundabout on to the A129: Eastwood Road turns off right after about a mile.

Accessible at all times.
